Former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter attends his first Veterans Day at Yankee Stadium On Saturday, New York celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1998 team that won 125 games.
Jeter was accompanied by Puerto Ricans Jorge Posada, Andy Pettit and Mariano Rivera, part of the “core quartet” who teamed up with former head coach Joe To Ray attended the meeting together. Fellow Puerto Rican Bernie Williams was out Thursday following shoulder replacement surgery but recorded a brief video message.
Currently Yankees fans are disappointed after a 70-71 start and are in danger of losing for the first time since 1992.. Some fans directed their anger at current coach Aaron Boone, even booing when Boone was introduced.
“When you agree to do this job, and I think Derek talked about that, expectations are through the roof,” Torre said at a news conference.
“There’s no way to avoid it. You’re going to have to deal with it and understand that when things go wrong, there’s always a dark cloud hanging over you. Judging from my chats with Boonie and seeing him from time to time, he’s handling it well. He’s out there and he’s working hard and that’s all you can really do. They’ve had some bad moments, but that’s no excuse when you’re a Yankee. You are expected to win. And, like I said, when he signed up, he knew what he was getting into. “
Have a special feeling for the Yankees
“I’m trying to change the old-timer’s name to something else,” Jeter said. “When you’re playing, when you’re sitting on the bench watching a game, you never imagine being introduced to the old-timers, because you never think you will grow old just because we don’t age, right?
