Terence Davis died at the age of 77.
The famous British director died peacefully at home after a short illness, according to a message on his Instagram account.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Terence Davies, who passed away peacefully at home after a short illness today, October 7, 2023.
“Pulvis et Umbra Sumus, We are but dust and shadows (Horace), And if you want, remember, And if you want, forget. (Christine Rossetti). Terence Davies (1945–2023).”
The message was accompanied by a photograph of Terence, who was born in Liverpool in 1945.
The director and screenwriter is known for the autobiographical films Distant Voices, Still Lifes (1988) and Long Day’s Coming (1992).
He also directed The Neon Bible (1995), The Funhouse (2000), starring Gillian Anderson, and Deep Blue Sea (2011), starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston.
His latest film was Blessing in 2021, starring Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi as poet Siegfried Sassoon.
Davis has spoken openly about his homosexuality, but admitted that he enjoys being alone more than being in a relationship.
He previously told The Guardian newspaper: “When I was at film school, I lived with a woman. She was a teacher. Even in 1977 there was still this attitude: “Well, find the right person and you’ll be happy.
“I’ve never been with anyone. And I didn’t know how things could constantly change between people. It was very difficult for me to bear it. You misinterpret them, or they misinterpret you. “Not very good at it. Neither of us were. We both knew what the truth was and it was definitely over. That’s why I’ve been living alone since 1980.”
“I had been in the gay scene for a couple of months and thought it just wasn’t for me. I didn’t like sexual venality and narcissism. I can’t live like this. If other people live like this, “I want to do it, that’s okay. And I don’t regret anything. I know several gay couples who have been together for a long time and they love each other, and that’s nice to see.
“I would rather be lonely and lonely than live a life that I couldn’t justify to myself.”
