Stranger Things: David Harbor tells a funny blooper

David Harbor recalls a funny glitch that happened during the filming of Stranger Things season 3, which took at least three hours of filming time. Harbor was unable to say “That’s your grandma” while trying to get Mike Finn Wolfhard out of the house and away from Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Although Harbor claims that everyone else enjoyed it for a while, they eventually got mad at him for delaying their lunch break.
Stranger Things star David Harbor relives one hilarious blunder from the show that almost took a full day of filming. Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things first aired on Netflix in 2016 and has become one of the streamers’ most popular shows. Harbor plays Jim Hopper, the police chief of Hawkins, Indiana, who becomes the father figure to “Eleven” Millie Bobby Brown.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Harbor revealed that during the filming of the third season of Stranger Things, there was a glitch that seemed to never end.
In the scene in question, Hopper confronts Eleven and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and, angered by their new relationship, lies about Mike’s grandmother being sick to get him out of the house. However, as the actor explains, his line “She’s your grandmother” was too funny to say. Check out Harbor’s memories of the day of filming below:
“My God, it was such a hard day. You don’t even know. The interrogation lasted three hours. I ruined the day. They couldn’t believe it. And she went through the stage when everyone had fun for half an hour, I just could not stop. And then they got so mad at me that we were going to keep having lunch, you should have been fined. And then it got very funny again. It was like an arc from a movie, it was amazing.”
Stranger Things humor is its secret weapon
While Stranger Things has some pretty intense storylines and some emotional character deaths, the role of humor in the show is just as important. Much of the humor comes from the great chemistry between the large cast of Stranger Things with young actors like Brown, Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp and Sadie Sink all having great on-screen momentum.
Relationships between younger and older actors also add to the funny moments, especially Hopper clearly has a soft spot for boys, but he also has to deal with his own issues and isn’t always willing to put up with their immaturity. Other characters, like Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman), are just comedic entertainment most of the time, adding moments of frivolity to very serious life and death situations.
Of course, the show’s humor is also part of its heart. Stranger Things’ visuals and breathtaking action sequences are certainly impressive, but it’s the characters and their warm but imperfect relationships that take the show to a whole new level. In addition to scenes of real emotion, the funny moments in Stranger Things make the characters even more worthy of support.
