Fans mocked Cristiano Ronaldo after Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d’Or on Monday night, with some claiming the Argentina striker is now the “undisputed GOAT”.
It’s been a stellar year for the Inter Miami forward, who has been recognized for his achievements on the pitch, leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.
The 36-year-old was also behind the victory over France in the final, scoring twice and converting a penalty kick in the shootout.
The four-time Champions League winner also impressed for PSG last season, scoring 32 goals in 55 appearances in all competitions.
Messi continues to impress for his new club, while Ronaldo has also impressed for Al Nasr this season, with the Portuguese superstar scoring 14 goals in 14 games.
But after the Argentinian’s victory tonight, fans took to the X website to claim that the debate over who is the greatest footballer of all time is over.
One fan wrote: “Ronaldo fans, it’s time to admit that Messi is the real GOAT of football.”
“Do you know it’s possible to love Ronaldo and accept that Messi has done more and achieved more than him?” Messi is the undisputed GOAT, let’s be honest. ” added another.
Ronaldo fans even questioned Messi’s victory tonight, with one writing: “Ronaldo has won every Ballon d’Or he has won but I can’t say the same for Messi, congratulations to him.”
The Al Nasr striker also enjoyed an illustrious career, winning one European Championship, five Champions League titles and five Ballon d’Or awards.
Yet some claim Messi should have won more Ballons d’Or during his career.
One wrote: “Messi beat Ronaldo 8-5 at the Ballon d’Or, but it should have been around 11-2.”
“Ronaldo only won about three games because Real Madrid won the Champions League. Obviously he’s still good, but he can’t be better than Messi unless there’s a season.”
While others claimed both footballers should be celebrated for their contribution to the game.
“Ronaldo fans should celebrate Messi’s victory; hating him won’t help Ronaldo win the next World Cup or another 3 Ballon d’Ors, they wrote.
“Both players are outstanding, but Messi is always thousands ahead, thanks to his God-given talent. Football is a game of love, remember that. Don’t throw shade.
