George Hill had a 15-year NBA career and played with LeBron James in the 2018 Finals for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
But the 37-year-old remains unemployed after being waived by the Indiana Pacers after the 2022-23 season.
The veteran guard has made it clear that he wants to continue playing and is waiting for his next opportunity ahead of the 2023-24 NBA season.
“I feel like I have a lot more to offer, both on the court and as a vet,” Hill said when he rejoined the Pacers in February.
Hill had a journeyman career that saw him play for eight teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, and two stints each with the Milwaukee Bucks and Pacers.
He remains a hero for the Pacers, having led his hometown team to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014.
Hill has only appeared in one NBA Finals, when the Cavaliers were swept by the Golden State Warriors in 2018.
He missed a potential game-winning free throw at the end of Game 1 that could have changed the tide of the series.
With the Cavaliers trailing by one with 4.7 seconds left, Hill stepped to the free throw line with a chance to make his mark on the team he joined before the February trade deadline.
He tried to tie the game on his first try but failed on his second, and Cleveland ultimately lost 124-114 in overtime.
Hill said the missed free throws bothered him for a long time.
“You get a little frustrated at first because as a player, as a competitor, you kind of put the blame on yourself,” Hill told The Athletic.
“It bothered me all summer long.
“If I hit the free throw, would it be a different series? Or would it be just 4-1?
“It’s a win, not a defeat. But if it’s 4-1, then a game doesn’t really matter.”
“But who knows? I did it and now the pressure is on them.
“Maybe it’s a different series.”
Hill, who has earned $112 million in his career, knows he likely won’t play much with a future NBA team.
But he’s happy to provide support and insight as a role player.
“I’ve always been a team-first guy. Doing what the team needs,” he said.
“I’ve always been a top teammate, encouraging my teammates and keeping a positive attitude.”
