Former Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton is in intensive care at a Texas hospital after suffering from pneumonia.
Layton’s daughter, McKenna Kelly, revealed the former gymnast’s condition in an Instagram post on Tuesday. He said Leighton, 55, the first American to win the all-around Olympic title, was “fighting for her life” and unable to breathe on her own.
Kelly started a fundraiser for Layton to pay for his medical expenses. Layton currently does not have health insurance, he wrote.
At the age of 16, Layton won a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and became a U.S. Olympic icon. The athlete, who grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia, also won two silver medals and a pair of bronze medals. Olympic Games.
