The Venice Court of Appeal partially modified the first degree verdict, awarding compensation of 100 thousand euros to Arezzo seismologist and volcanologist Barbara Cantucci, widow of Carabinieri Colonel Valerio Gildoni, a Carabinieri soldier originally from Città di Castello. who was killed in the province of Vicenza in the summer of 2009. Members of the officer’s family, who were defended by Tiferno’s lawyer Gianmarco Bianchi, were satisfied with the outcome of this stage of the civil process, and the lawyer managed to emphasize the economic gap between the parties even with an expert opinion (in the first instance, the judges ordered compensation of only 40 thousand euros, which was a real mockery of the wife , parents and brother of the colonel). Thus, the revised verdict has already entered into force with subsequent procedures initiated.
“In the appeal,” said Bianchi’s lawyer, “it was not possible to present new documentation, but we still achieved our goal.”
Thus, the civil dispute over the murder of Colonel Gildoni was closed 14 years after the crime: the judges found that Battista Zanellato, the man who killed the army officer in Nanto di Vicenza, was completely mentally ill. Zanellato, who died in 2016, turned 85 in July 2009. During this period, the elderly man was suffering from various health problems and decided to barricade himself in his home, barricading himself with a hunting rifle. The son raised the alarm, asking for the intervention of a doctor who arrived with the soldiers, accompanied by Colonel Gildoni, who had just taken office in Vicenza.
Therefore, family members expressed satisfaction with this epilogue. Colonel Gildoni, son of Paola and Settimio (former marshal of the Sansepolcro station), was married to the seismologist and volcanologist Cantucci, but had no children; he was also the maternal second cousin of actress Monica Bellucci.
The brother is Don Alberto Gildoni, parish priest of the Citta di Castello, Episcopal Chancellor and Secretary of the Diocesan Presbyteral Council. For his conduct under conditions of obvious risk, he was awarded a gold medal for military valor.
