Through a comment via Twitter, the director revealed that the third and final chapter will be the longest of any film so far dedicated to the Guardians of the Galaxy. So it is a long goodbye, the one dedicated to fans of the trilogy, but how long exactly? James Gunn preferred not to reveal too much specifically, but jumped at the opportunity when a fan asked about the film’s alleged running time: “Is it true that it will last about two and a half hours?”. At that point, the director replied:
It’s going to be around that long, though it’s still not correct. And, I promise, not a second will be wasted. We have not added any filler. It was necessary to experience the full story arc of all the main Guardians characters not only for this film, but also for the entire trilogy (or should I say beyond the trilogy).
A statement that immediately gave ideas: what do you mean by other than the main trilogy? Is there really a future for the Guardians even without James Gunn? The director added a further comment, dampening the enthusiasm. He refers, in fact, to the special Christmas aired on Disney+, as well as the warriors’ involvement in Avengers: Endgame. In any case, the length of the film should focus on 2 hours and 29 minutes, including end credits and any post credit scenes. At the moment we still don’t have an official confirmation, but according to the words of James Gunn he shouldn’t stray too far from that playing time.
