Overview
The second edition and update builds on the 2021 interim guidance and incorporates lessons learned and feedback from the hepatitis pilot, which successfully demonstrated the feasibility of measuring hepatitis B and hepatitis C impact targets to demonstrate elimination, while highlighting high disease rates in some countries. Challenges posed by burden and delays in reaching mortality targets due to the long natural history of disease progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Pathways to Elimination provides a framework with 3 levels of achievement that can be certified by WHO. Progression at each step from Bronze to Silver to Gold will facilitate iterative expansion of viral hepatitis prevention, diagnosis and treatment services and strengthen measurement systems to support achievement of the 2030 elimination goal.
This updated version also includes changes, clarifications, and new guidance regarding state elimination verification of alternative measurement methods. Through the validation process, WHO and partners continue to provide support to countries to strengthen health system capacity and patient-centred services, respect and protect the human rights of people living with viral hepatitis, and ensure meaningful community engagement at national, regional and Global prevention and control of viral hepatitis.
