September 28 (INFOBAE). – Actor Sir Michael Gambon has died of pneumonia at the age of 82. His family confirmed this in a statement, revealing that he died peacefully at the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sir Michael Gambon. Michael’s much-loved husband and father passed away peacefully in hospital from pneumonia, with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside. We ask that you respect our thoughts at this painful time. Privacy, we appreciate your support and messages of love,” a statement shared by his representative, Clair Dobbs, on behalf of Michael’s wife, Anne Miller, and his son, Fergus wrote.
Gambon’s career spanned more than fifty years. He began his artistic career in 1962 with a performance of Othello at the theater in his hometown of Dublin. He immediately caught the attention of British director Laurence Olivier, who recruited him to join his theater company. He rose to theater fame in 1974 when he starred in The Conquests of Normandy, and has since become one of the most popular actors in the theater world.
Meanwhile, his film career began a few years after his theatrical debut, a film adaptation of Othello. He also appeared on television in the 1960s in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, demonstrating the importance of the famous playwright in the actor’s career.
Over the next few years, Gambon appeared in shows such as Borderlander, Orson Welles’s Great Mysteries, and How Ridiculous It Is, but there’s no doubt that Gambon made his mark on the small screen.
