A young woman suffers from facial paralysis and doctors still don’t understand why it happens. Now, he’s trying to deal with the aftermath and get back to a normal life.
Caoimhe Reddy, 26, fell asleep as usual. She had a cold, but she didn’t think much about it. However, the next morning, He woke up to a surprise: half his face was paralyzed and he couldn’t feel anything.
Although he didn’t feel any tingling sensations, his biggest concern was when he tried to drink a cup of coffee, couldn’t get it and it fell on him. When he called the emergency line, they told him he might have had a stroke.
More than a month later and hundreds of analyses, doctors still don’t know what caused the young Irish woman to become paralyzed, and she now struggles to return to a normal life. “I was still struggling to eat and drink, and it was actually hard to talk. At first I thought, ‘Okay, great. It’s going to go away in a few days. Then, two weeks went by and it still didn’t improve, and I pretty much had to keep going Learn how to cope,” he told the British newspaper The Independent.
According to Caoyimhe, she was completely healthy at the time of the incident. That’s why I thought the numbness in my cheeks was just a result of the cold I was experiencing.
“I woke up in bed and my boyfriend bought a cup of coffee and put it next to me. I went to drink it and it all came out of my mouth. At first I didn’t think anything of it, just: ‘This is kind of weird. “I looked in the mirror and noticed that my face was numb, but not tingling; “I felt the same as I did the night before,” he said of the day it all started.
Reddy was rushed to Charing Cross Hospital in London, where she lived, and doctors carried out a series of tests to find out the source of her condition. “They determined through an MRI and neurological tests that I didn’t have a stroke, but then they said they were ‘not quite sure’ what happened and sent me home,” he said.
The young woman then underwent clinical testing for seven weeks. Finally, they managed to find a possible diagnosis: Caoyimhe’s facial nerves inflamed, could lead to paralysis. Although doctors prescribed antibiotics, antivirals and steroids, his condition did not improve.
Now, the consequences of the incident are becoming clearer: “I can’t close my mouth properly and my taste buds have lost half their function.” However, the girl says she is trying her best to stay positive. “I just want to be as happy and healthy as possible. (…) I started acupuncture on Wednesday just to protect my mental health,” he concluded.
