Henri Matisse moved to the city in December 1917 and rented a room with a single window facing the sea; it was here that he wrote his first works in Nice. “When I realized that I would see this light again every morning, I couldn’t believe how happy I was. I decided not to leave Nice and lived there almost all my life.” tells. The next year, 1918. Henri Matisse bought this apartment to make it his home and studio.: overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, huge bay window opens up to nature, the artist’s inexhaustible source of inspiration. Facing the German threat in 1943, the artist was forced to leave Nice for Vencebefore returning in 1948. Henri Matisse died on November 3, 1954, within the walls of this apartment in Nice, which became a real witness to his artistic experiments, since it was here that he developed the “decoupe” painting technique, a series of works made of colored paper, cut into different shapes, from the size of one confetti to a panel the length of 80 centimeters.
