‘I needed to mentally go places I haven’t been…’: When Tom Holland revealed he was ‘nervous and scared’ while playing The Devil All the Time

Tom Holland is perhaps one of Hollywood’s most beloved celebrities. He is known for playing the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the MCU and fans loved his charming yet innocent on-screen personality. Although back in 2020, the actor took on a darker role, which Holland admitted he found difficult to pull off. In The Devil All the Time, Tom plays Arvin Russell, who can be described as a Gray character at best.

Tom Holland on his character doing the right thing

Following the film’s virtual premiere in 2020, the cast attended an online Q&A session with moderator Danny Lee, according to The Hollywood Reporter. When asked about his character, Holland responded, “He’s definitely… a glimmer of light in this movie in the sense that he’s always just trying to do the right thing.” But “doing the right thing” in this context was a little more twisted, as Tom added, “It just so happens that in this movie, doing the right thing means killing people.”

The then 24-year-old actor said he “had to trust Antonio (director) a lot” because The Devil All the Time was not a genre Holland had experience with. Tom admitted: “I was very nervous and scared to go on set for the first time. I didn’t know I had the strength to play this type of character.” It is reported that the actor had to go to places that he had never thought about before. He continued, “I had to mentally go to places I didn’t know I could go to or didn’t think I’d ever want to go to again.” But once the hardest part of playing the character was over, the Spider-Man actor said he was “proud” of it.
