If the Possum Falls Out…”: When Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Revealed She Cried After Their Dirty Dance Failure

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are one of the most beloved on-screen couples, known for their mesmerizing chemistry in films like Crazy, Stupid, Love and La La Land. However, one of their most iconic scenes was also one of their most challenging behind the scenes. During her appearance on The Graham Norton ShowEmma Stone opened up about childhood trauma that resurfaced during the filming of their famous Dirty Dancing routine, and Ryan Gosling humorously opened up about her reaction.

Emma Stone broke both her arms as a child

During the interview, Emma Stone spoke about an incident in her childhood in which she broke both of her arms. She described a traumatic experience in a gymnastics class in which she fell from the parallel bars, which were about six feet off the ground. Stone recalls: “When I was about seven years old, I was doing gymnastics and standing on parallel bars that were about six feet off the ground,” Stone began. “I was standing on top of the bars and the teacher was holding my ankles. Anyway, she let go… I felt myself starting to tip forward, and I stuck my arms out like this and fell six feet to the ground and broke both arms at the same time.”

Ryan Gosling talks about Emma Stone’s funny reaction to her inner phobia

Emma Stone continued her revelation by explaining that she developed an internalized phobia from this painful childhood experience, but had no idea about it until she had to do the Dirty Dancing exercise. Stone shared, “Years later, I knew we were going to do the Dirty Dancing lift—what I don’t know is that I have an internalized phobia of being lifted over someone’s head to about six feet. So I run to do the lift and Ryan lifts me over his head and… what did I do, Ryan?

During the elevator filming of Dirty Dancing, Ryan lifted Emma above his head, unaware of her internal phobia. Emma’s reaction was unexpected, to say the least. Ryan recalled: “It’s never happened to me, but I think if a possum fell out of a tree, landed on my head and tried to claw my eyes out, it would be something similar.” Gosling added: “She said, ‘I need to go see Labyrinth.’

Stone even said that at that moment “it was a complete collapse” for her, however, the superstar resisted and filmed the famous scene. Ryan Gosling’s witty recollection of the incident certainly helped highlight the humorous side of this behind-the-scenes adventure.
