Restuccia from the HIV, STI and Viral Hepatitis Program reports a significant increase in syphilis cases in the province, with the number of diagnoses tripling since 2021.

Contrary to popular belief, syphilis is still present and on the rise globally, with Chubut Province currently experiencing 90 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Syphilis is mainly spread through sexual intercourse and body fluids. The use of preservatives is crucial. It can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy.
“Syphilis is caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum, which is basically spread through sexual intercourse, through contact with fluids,” Restuccia said, recalling, “That’s why barrier methods are used So important, like penile and vaginal condoms or latex condoms.”
Additionally, he said, “This infection can also be transmitted through pregnancy, producing congenital syphilis in the baby, which is why it is crucial for pregnant women to maintain appropriate health care controls during pregnancy, during each trimester. conducting laboratory studies and including their sexual partners.”
Initially, syphilis appears as a lesion called a “chancre” that can appear in different parts of the body. With treatment, this disease is curable.
