Interview with Mauro Borelli
director – also known for WarHunt, The Recall The Invasion and White Shoe – told us about his new project, which will be released on June 8, 2023 in Italian cinemas.
What is your new film about?
AND crime story with elements of the supernatural. Because the idea of making an absolutely realistic detective story would not give me the same pleasure. I love science fiction and fantasy. So, even when making a crime story, I tried to add an element of “paradox”, to offer the viewer something unusual, something magical.
What was the inspiration for the Mind Cage plot?
Partially painted, interesting to see what the 500/600 has. Also I want to do something with detectives like Seven (Ed is a cult film by David Fincher released in 1995.), in fact, this film inspired me a lot. So I made this imprisoned murderer an artist who was obsessed with art, and through art he could commit crimes.
Can you tell me about the process of developing John’s dangerous serial killer? Malkovich?
I knew I had limited time to use this actor; so I tried to maximize its main function. I extended some scenes in an attempt to be psychological and create controversy with the detective. He is a great actor and a pleasure to work with. This is the one who read 7 pages of dialogue half an hour earlier and memorized them all. In addition, it also offers very smart notes, helps to rewrite some of the bars.
Mind Cage is described as a psychological thriller. What are they What are the challenges of balancing the psychological side with the tension and action typical of thrillers?
All the scenes taking place in the prison are mental debates. Thus, the film alternates closed scenes in a single environment (a prison where psychological development takes place) and scenes outside it, acting as an interlude. Among other things, the film was originally more complex and articulate: the scenes were supposed to be much more spectacular. However, with COVID, the actors couldn’t even touch each other; so we had some problems making it due to the Coronavirus explosion on the set. Even the scene – where there is a fight between the main character and the “psycho” that you will see in the film – is solved “from a distance” (‘huge’ fight was originally planned, director tells us). This situation impoverished the original idea.
Mindcage – Criminal mind: plot, cast and review
Directed by Borelli, Mindcage – Mente Criminale is psychological thriller which will arrive in Italian cinemas on June 8, 2023. In this feature film, two detectives – when struck by a horrific serial killer – ask for help from an imprisoned killer.

The director then builds a thriller with supernatural elementsdemonstrating his ability to mix genres and create “dark frame” very interesting. The set design is perhaps the most striking element. However, unfortunately the film – especially the final twist, which many viewers will not appreciate as much – not entirely convincing: a faded portrait that probably deserved more accuracy.
The cast does a good job, especially John Malkovich (bird boxRed, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Being John Malkovich, The Man in the Iron Mask) as a very complex individual. Martin Lawrence – mainly known for numerous comedies – plays his first dramatic role … with moderate results.
