Jada Pinkett Smith has been criticized for her treatment of husband Will Smith as fans recalled her previous confessions after she posted a glowing birthday tribute.
The 50-year-old actress took to Instagram on Monday to post a heartfelt message to her husband of 25 years on the occasion of his 55th birthday.
But the post was soon flooded with harsh comments from other social media users who criticized the sentiment in light of Jada’s previous statements about their marriage.
The mum-of-two previously revealed how she cried all the way down the aisle on her wedding day – before calling her years-long romance with R&B singer Augusta Alsina, now 31, an “entanglement”.
The birthday message, shared by Jada’s 11.4 million followers, featured a black-and-white photo of the couple and their two children, as well as Will’s son Trey from a previous marriage.
She wrote: “Willard. I’m so glad you were born on this day. Without you, I would not have experienced the greatest joy in my life… the love of our family.
“As I fulfill this divine assignment that we have chosen to walk together, I am grateful for the sources of laughter along the paths of tears that we have shared.
“Thank you for helping me learn to accept it all… with a smile. Wishing you over 100 more birthdays full of growth, acceptance and joy.”
But this soon caused a negative reaction, with many rushing to refer to Jada’s previous confessions about marriage.
One wrote: “I hope you stop humiliating him.”
Another said: “Didn’t you cheat?” Get real!
And a third added sarcastically: “Aren’t you glad you married him even when you cried and didn’t want to?” I’m so cute.’
The comments addressed a number of revelations Jada had previously made about her relationship with Will.
In 2018, during an episode of Red Table Talk where Will appeared as a guest, Jada insisted that she “never wanted to get married” – she tied the knot on New Year’s Eve 1997 at the Gothic Cloisters Castle outside her hometown of Baltimore.
In a newly surfaced clip, the star opened up about her doubts about marriage and then revealed that she decided to tie the knot with Will to appease her mother after she fell pregnant.
Will and Jada conceived their son Jaden while they were still dating, and Jada said on the show, “At that moment after the performance, I knew I was pregnant.”
She said she “cried all night” because she realized “my life would never be the same” after becoming a mother.
“I really didn’t want to get married,” Jada admitted, prompting Will to laugh, “We only got married because Gammie cried.”
“It was like Gammie said, ‘It’s time for you to get married, so let’s talk about getting married,'” Jada said, noting that “I was under so much pressure, you know, being a young actress, being young , and I was kind of pregnant, and I just, I just didn’t know what to do, but I just knew, I never wanted to get married.”
“I remember feeling really strong and wanting you guys to get married,” said Adrienne, who was a teenager when she became pregnant with Jada and briefly married Robsol Pinkett Jr.’s father.
“I remember that, but I don’t remember you rejecting the idea of marriage.” I remember rejecting the idea of a wedding, but not marriage,” she added.
Jada agreed that she never wanted a wedding either, describing her feelings at the time: “And now Gammy has gone to Will and is crying because I don’t want a wedding, and now I’m being forced into a wedding when really I just wanted , so that it would be just the two of us on the mountain, because I thought, “This is serious business.”
Adrienne apologized “that I didn’t respect your wishes,” admitting that she was “selfish” for insisting on a full ceremony because Jada was “my only child” and it was Adrienne’s only chance to see her daughter’s wedding.
Both Jada and Will agreed that marriage was ultimately the “right decision,” but Jada and Adrienne admitted that the marriage was “horrible.”
But this was not her only mistake after admitting to a long-term affair.
The couple made headlines in July 2020 when they opened up about Jada’s romance with Augusta Alsina on her tell-all talk show Red Table Talk.
She began explaining that the couple met August through their 22-year-old son Jayden, and recalled that the singer, who was 23 at the time, was “very ill” (as he was battling a genetic liver disease).
Jada said, “And it all started because he just needed help and I wanted to help his health, his mental state.
“Our family was initially concerned about his health,” she said. “We found all these different resources to help him survive, and we went through some very difficult times after that.”
Following Jada’s confession, Will admitted, “I’m done with you,” and Jada added that they had decided to separate “for a while.”
“And then what did you do, Jada?” Will asked, urging his wife to continue talking.
“Over time, I ended up in another relationship with August,” Jada explained.
The mother of two responded to Augusta’s claim that Will gave her “permission” to have an affair.
When Will pushed Jada to clarify what she meant by “entanglement,” she responded, “It was a relationship, absolutely.”
Jada continued: “I was in a lot of pain and I was very broken. In the process of this relationship, I finally realized that happiness cannot be found outside of oneself.”
She denied August’s claim that Will gave his blessing to the affair and stated that they were separated at the time.
This novel shocked the whole world, and many turned to Will to find out how the movie star would react.
Interestingly, Jada initially denied Augusta’s claims that they were an item before eventually admitting that “there needs to be some healing.”
