James Gunn comments on alleged rumors of Margot Robbie Harley Quinn program.

James Gunn comments on a rumored Harley Quinn show with Margot Robbie, which was supposed to be one of the unannounced DC Universe projects. Gunn, along with DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, unveiled the first plans for the new DC universe in January. At the time of the presentation, Gunn stated that there were a healthy amount of projects in various stages of development that had been left out of the list. This has led to speculation about what these projects might be, with a recent rumor claiming that a Harley Quinn series starring Robbie is among them. Gunn has now addressed the matter.

On Twitter, Gunn was quick to debunk the rumor that a Harley Quinn series starring Robbie was in DC’s plans.

The rumor suggested that DC was working on a prequel series with Robbie as Harley Quinn. The series was called Harleen and focused on how Harley’s attempt to save the Joker led to his loss of sanity. The rumor also claimed that Harvey Dent/Two Face would be involved in the series and that the series would exist outside of The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey continuity. Ultimately, Gunn’s straightforward response kills any chance the rumor is true.

After another scene-stealing performance among the cast of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, it seems likely that Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in the new DC universe. She the actress said she loved playing Harley Quinn and her role playing her was one of the few consistently positive aspects of the old DCEU. Gunn, especially after working with Robbie on The Suicide Squad, will want to have that impactful performance in his DC universe.

There are some possibilities for Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn. Of the announced projects in the DC universe, Harley Quinn would likely do well with a role in HBO Max’s upcoming series, Waller. While Robbie has only appeared as Harley Quinn in DC films thus far, the character would feel right at home in Amanda Waller’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series. Viola Davis reprises her role as Waller, with unspecified members of Gunn’s Peacemaker series set to join the project. Robbie’s first role as Harley Quinn in the new DC universe could be about the aftermath of her taking on Waller in The Suicide Squad, that would be exciting.

Another possible project that could see Robbie’s Harley Quinn return is a solo entry for the anti-hero. Robbie has commented several times in the past that he would like to see Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy meet in live-action and develop a romance. The two characters have a fan-favorite relationship in both the comics and HBO Max’s animated series Harley Quinn, the latter in which Gunn guest-hosted as himself. Robbie’s Harley Quinn opposite Poison Ivy would be an impressive film for the new DC universe, with the popularity of both characters making for a nice boost of interest in the new DC.
