In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chad Stahelski he recalled the risks he took in choosing to kill there little dog in the first John Wick (READ THE SPECIAL).
In the film that hit theaters in 2014, Keanu Reeves plays a murderer who is recalled from retirement when mobsters kill the puppy that his late wife left him. Stahelski explains that he and uncredited co-director David Leitch had a lot of doubts about killing the animal, due to the implications it might have on their own lives. Here are his words:
The killing of the little dog has been taken out[of the script]as many times as it has been put back in. Ultimately, it’s a mythological thing. We had to exaggerate, take it to the extreme to make you understand that it was absolutely symbolic. We are not trying to maintain realism. We want viewers to know we are laughing. But you don’t even know how stressed Dave and I were about it. Holy shit, we were risking credit cards, home mortgage, everything. (Producer) Basil Iwanyk set up his company. And then there comes that day when you realize we’re doing all of this and we’re killing a puppy? I thought we would never go back.
We remind you that John Wick 4 (READ THE REVIEW), the new chapter of the popular action saga with Keanu Reeveswill hit theaters on March 23rd. Writing the film, which was shot in Berlin, are Michael Finch and Shay Hatten. At the direction we always find Chad Stahelski.
The fourth film will be the penultimate in the saga, which has meanwhile been expanded with a titled spin-off Dancerstarring Ana de Armas, and a Starz prequel series titled The Continental.
