Kendrick Lamar breaks records at BET Hip-Hop Awards

On Tuesday night (October 10), BET announced its annual Hip-Hop Awards, which originally took place on October 3 in Atlanta. Following the release of his latest album in the summer of 2022. Mister Moral and The Big SteppersKendrick Lamar took home several trophies at the ceremony, breaking several BET Hip-Hop Awards records in the process.

Winning in every category in which he was nominated, Lamar took home awards for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Live Artist of the Year and Video Director of the Year. In the Hip-Hop Artist of the Year category, he beat out competitors such as 21 Savage, Burna Boy, Cardi B, Drake, GloRilla, J. Cole and Lil Uzi Vert. This is the third time he has received this award, more than ever.

In the Lyricist of the Year category, he beat out 21 Savage, André 3000, Burna Boy, Cardi B, Conway The Machine, Drake and J. Cole. This is the ninth time he has received this honor, extending the already established record.

In the Best Live Act category, he beat out Burna Boy, Busta Rhymes, Cardi B, Coi Leray, DaBaby, Drake and Megan Thee Stallion. Having surpassed Kanye West and Jay-Z in terms of records, he received this award for the fourth time.

Finally, he beat out Anderson .Paak, Cole Bennett, Colin Tilley, DaBaby & Reel Goats, Dave Meyers and Travis Scott for Video Director of the Year, which he won with his manager Dave Free. This is the second year in a row that he and Free have received the award, the first time since 2012.

Ultimately, this is just the latest of several major achievements for Lamar and his Mister Morals and The Big Steppers LP. Earlier this year, it not only received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, but also won the award for Best Rap Album. He also won two more Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “The Heart Part 5,” a promotional single he released a few weeks earlier. MM&TBSlater using it as a bonus track.
