Killers of the Flower MoonMartin Scorsese’s new filmREAD REVIEW) tells the true story of the FBI’s investigation into a series of murders of numerous members Osage Nation in the 1920s, after the discovery of oil on their land. We find Molly, a member of the community, playing the role Lily Gladstone, who spoke with director Kelly Reichardt for The Interview magazine about the significant changes his character underwent during the script rewrite. Here are his words:
Before the rewrite (of the script), I had about three pages of dialogue. cursed, but I struggled so much with the scenes that when COVID stopped everything and the project shut down for a while, I thought I blew the audition. About a year later, I received a request for (a) Zoom call with Martin Scorsese.
And then they sent me new pages of the script with small scenes. Suddenly I thought of a scene that had very little dialogue: it was the dinner scene, the first date, when Molly (Gladstone’s character) becomes interested Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio’s character and her husband in the film). And I said to myself: “Oh man, now I can create a character here. This is fantastic“. Because I heard that the rewrite completely changed the game. Leo was supposed to play Tom White, Jesse Plemons’ character.
The actress then appears to confirm rumors that the film’s original plan was for DiCaprio to play Tom White, an FBI agent investigating murders in Osage Country. But the actor didn’t want the role of an upright hero, so the script was rewritten to cast him as the morally ambiguous Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of a greedy rancher. Thus, his character and Molly were at the center of the story.
During the conversation Gladstone says that Killers of the Flower Moon he was filmed for a good six months, during which there was a point where he had to put his body to the test. Here’s what:
There is a significant portion of the film where Molly is unwell. That’s why we don’t see her often. Wasting disease. I took a couple of weeks off from the very strict diet and exercise plan I followed to get to this point. During this time I lost almost 30 kilograms.
