Mexico City. Between March and September this year, the Federal Council for the Prevention of Health Risks (Cofepris) approved 1,974 medical supplies, including new drugs, clinical trials and medical equipment.

These include drugs and trials in endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, hematology, infectious diseases, pulmonology, neurology, oncology, psychiatry and more, he added.

In addition, it licenses a variety of innovative medical devices for healthcare, such as infusion devices, probes, implants, intraocular lenses, catheters, hearing aids, etc.; for diagnosing HIV, HPV, mononucleosis, cholera , equipment for diseases such as herpes and diabetes, as well as medical equipment such as surgical lasers, defibrillators, ventilator-assisted resuscitators, microscopes, video laryngoscopes, and surgical instruments.

In its latest report, Cofepris reported that 30 drugs were approved in the second half of September, with five innovative molecules standing out: amlodipine/losartan/chlorthalidone, for the treatment of hypertension; Beprazole, designed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease; fampridine, used to treat multiple sclerosis; memantine, used to help fight Alzheimer’s disease; and opatadine/mometasone, used to treat allergies rhinitis.

Nine medical trials were also approved, including one designed to evaluate new treatment alternatives for anaplastic lymphoma, another focused on treatments for lupus erythematosus, and one more focused on new treatment options for breast cancer.

In terms of medical devices, 49 devices for healthcare use were authorized; among them: drainage tubes, digital hearing aids and bone bioimplants. Also approved were 49 diagnostic supplies and 34 medical devices, such as video gastroscopy systems, video laryngoscopes and ventilation-assisted resuscitators, for a total of 132 newly authorized devices.

He said that the Cofepris Health Authorization Committee (CAS) has a large professional review team, which is responsible for determining the production, marketing and use authorization of drugs and medical devices to provide convenience for people’s health.
