Lakers injury report: LeBron James, Austin Reeves out for Warriors vs. Lakers game

LeBron James and Austin Reeves are not injured, but they will not play in the Lakers’ first preseason game against the Warriors on Saturday.

LeBron James has looked like a freight train so far during Lakers training camp, but fans will have to wait a little longer to see him leave the station. Both he and Austin Reaves will miss the team’s preseason opener against the Golden State Warriors.



James said after practice Thursday that the plan is for him to play in only half of the team’s six preseason games, and Saturday’s game won’t be one of them:

Head coach Davon Hamm added that there are no specific issues with James, saying during media day that his health is as good as ever. The team just manages the time he spends on the court:

All of this seems entirely reasonable leading up to James’ 21st professional season, which is about to turn 39. How many minutes the team can and will play James this year remains an open question, but not playing him in a road game to open the exhibition isn’t a complete shock.

As for Reeves, he was added to the list of players absent against the team on Friday. The Golden State Warriors continue to slowly improve after their first long playoff run and Team USA experience over the summer:

But like James, Reeves received rave reviews during training camp, it’s just a matter of load management:

With James and Reeves out of the lineup, the team’s starting five will remain a mystery, as any of the three players alongside Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell could end up being The final two members of the full roster join James and Reeves.

So we’ll have to wait until at least the team’s second preseason game (Monday, Oct. 9 in Las Vegas against the Brooklyn Nets) to see Ham’s first game in the first-round group stage. That’s what the game will be, because at least James is ready considering he’ll almost certainly want to play in a city where he hopes to one day have an NBA team, which seems possible, and if Revie If Si is really healthy, then it seems a safe bet that he will join him.

The Lakers and Warriors will play without James and Reeves on Saturday, October 7 at 5:30 pm PT in the Bay Area. The game will be televised locally on Spectrum SportsNet and nationally on NBA TV.
