Even LeBron can’t believe he’s now the oldest player in the NBA.
LeBron James is back in the NBA heading into Game 21 of the 2023-2024 season, but a few things have changed. First, James changed his jersey number from No. 6 to No. 23 out of respect for Bill Russell. Additionally, with Udonis Haslem and Andre Iguodala both unsigned and unofficially retired, James is now the oldest active player in the NBA.
James will start the new season at age 38 and turns 39 on December 30. James will become one of six players in NBA history to play at least 21 seasons. He joins Robert Parish, Kevin Willis, Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki as the No. 21 player on the season. Only Vince Carter played 22 seasons.
LeBron was informed during Thursday’s practice that for the first time in his career, he will become the oldest player in the NBA. This is his reaction.
James is nearing the end of his career, but he’s still able to display incredible athleticism. One of his dunks in practice this week Making new teammate Jackson Hayes pause the interview in disbelief.
James was born in 1984. Here are some other former NBA players born in the same year: Deron Williams, Kendrick Perkins, Charlie Villanueva, Andrew Bogut, Aaron Gray and Sean May. All of these guys have been out of the spotlight of the league and NBA for many years now. Meanwhile, LeBron still has championship aspirations with the Lakers this year.
James remains an incredibly polarizing superstar: some fans love him, and others can’t wait for him to retire. That’s the great way. Either way, LeBron’s time on the court is running out. While we still can, let’s appreciate all that He has done.
