Leonardo DiCaprio he’s lived his life in front of the camera and worked with hundreds of scene partners throughout his Oscar-winning career—and the respected actor has been particularly complimentary of him Killers of the Flower Moon co-star Lily Gladstone.
In ET’s exclusive on-set interview with DiCaprio, recorded before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike began, the star opened up about working with Gladstone and her husband’s role in the highly anticipated film. Martin Scorsese– helmet drama.
“I felt her as Molly,” DiCaprio said of Gladstone, who plays a member of the Osage tribe and the wife of DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart. “She embodied that character, she took on the soul of that woman and joined the Osage community.”
“Again, being from another tribe, going to the Osage community, hearing the story of (Molly) and her direct descendants, I just embodied in every moral aspect of my being who Molly was,” DiCaprio continued. “(And she) expressed that very deeply in her speech.”
“She’s the heart and soul of this movie, she really is,” he added.
Gladstone had equal praise for DiCaprio and admitted that filming next to the on-screen icon was a little intimidating at first.
“The first day I worked with him, my hands were naturally shaking because he’s Leonardo DiCaprio,” Gladstone said. “But after getting over those initial nerves, I just sat across from an incredibly genuine, generous, talented, extremely talented actor.”
“And the rest of the nervousness about it faded away when we were so focused on whether we were doing our characters justice,” she added. “So it was incredibly inspiring.”
Based on David Grann’s bestselling non-fiction book K.Illers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBIThe upcoming Western crime epic centers on a series of murders that occur in 1920s Oklahoma after oil is discovered on tribal lands in the Osage Nation.
The killings became known as the “Reign of Terror,” during which wealthy members of the Osage Nation were killed for their oil money by “white attackers who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as possible before resorting to murder.”
In addition to DiCaprio (in his seventh screen collaboration with Scorsese) and Gladstone, the film also stars frequent Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro, who plays historical villain William King Hale, as well as Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow. , Tantu Cardinal and others.
ET spoke with De Niro ahead of Tribeca Festival 2023 in June, during which he spoke about the film impressive reception and rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival weeks earlier.
“We were very happy,” De Niro said of the film’s reception. “Look, I’d rather stand there for nine minutes and give a standing ovation than be booed for nine minutes. Because this audience, the Cannes audience, is famous for its booing.”
