Powerful and explosive trio composed by Marc Ribot (Los Cubanos Postizos, John Zorn, Tom Waits), with two of the best musicians representing the new generation of New York and California’s experimental and improvisational underground rock scene: Shahzad Ismaili (Will) Oldham, Secret Chiefs 3, Jolie Holland, Yoko Ono) on bass and electronics, and Chase Smith (Shiu Shiu, Good for Cows, Secret Chiefs) on drums. They present the brand new album, Hope, releasing on June 25th, 2023.
In May 2020, Marc Ribot was beginning to find it hopeless to be depressed. The guitarist and his Ceramic Dog trio – bassist/multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaili and drummer Chase Smith – had not played for months. Thus, all of the attendees decided to travel to Esmaili’s Figure 8 Recording Studio in Brooklyn to record Hope, to be released on June 25 through Northern Spy. “Originally – says Ribot – we wanted to say better luck next time, but it seemed to us… somehow unnecessary”.
The band, which has been releasing music since 2008, devised an order of operations for walking into the studio, washing their hands, and settling into a safe location. Due to security measures, Ribot, Esmaili and Smith never saw each other during the sessions; They were working to keep the bassist’s “dirty” lungs from compromising his health. But thanks to Ismaili’s technical prowess, everyone “felt better than ever,” Ribot said. With due caution, the trio crafted eight original songs that reflected the uncertainty of the era, culminating in a reimagining of Donovan’s Where Your Love Was Like Heaven, in which the trio turned idealistic psychological effort-folk into a reflective and spoken piece. Gives Tapping into pent-up artistic desire, the sessions also produced substantial material for What I Did on My Long “Vacation”, a teaser of sorts for this current shipment in October 2020.
Ribot, who has played with Tom Waits, Jack McDuff, Diana Krall and countless others, recalled, “When I took a cab to the studio with my amp, it was the first time I’d taken a cab in three or four months. Was.” “And I only took a cab once; The rest of the time I went by bike. I was a very good boy.”
While the bandleader created detailed snapshots of pandemic-era life for Hope, the passion that drives Ceramic Dog back into the studio is evident in every track. Ribot said, “We were very happy to be playing, recording and making music again.” “In the future – if there is ever a time in the future – when people look back on last year, they will not believe it. But this record was our testimony… and our lifeline.
