Martin Scorsese expressed regret about working with Leonardo DiCaprio

In a thoughtful interview reflecting on his six-decade career, Martin Scorsese admitted that he regrets one of his many collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The legendary 80-year-old director, who has directed DiCaprio eight times, including his latest drama. Killers of the Flower Moonadmitted that in recent years he had become disillusioned with one particular release.

Talking to GQScorsese remembered the psychological thriller Shutter Islandand suggested that he should not have agreed to direct it.

According to the director, he made this decision after the long-awaited success at the Oscars.

However, in recent years it has increasingly been considered the director’s lesser work compared to his more critically acclaimed works, including Taxi driver (1976), Mad bull (1980) and Age of Innocence (1993).

It is also the director’s only feature film released in the last two decades without receiving a single Oscar nomination.

It’s unclear whether Scorsese’s comments were hinting at the two films he directed before 2016. Silence – Hugo (2011) and The wolf of Wall Street.

Elsewhere in the new interview, Scorsese also discussed several of his other collaborations with DiCaprio, the first of which took place in 2002. Gangs of New York – shooting, which, according to the director, he had problems with due to the intervention of producer Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview, Scorsese said that Weinstein’s intervention, which saw him make demands on the film’s budget and length, made him “realize that I couldn’t work if I ever had to make films this way again.”

He added: “If this was the only way I was allowed to make films, then I would have to stop. Because the results were not satisfactory. It was extremely difficult at times and I couldn’t handle it. I would be dead. And that’s what I decided.”

However, Scorsese was lured away again Pilot (2004), his second collaboration with DiCaprio, in which he was “forced” to work with Weinstein again. The director said filming was going well until the last few weeks of editing, when Weinstein’s then-company, Miramax, “came in and did some things that I thought were extremely despicable.”
