When you’re recognized as the greatest basketball player of all time and one of the greatest athletes of all time… it turns out your rookie season basketball card is worth it a lot of money. Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith put an unclaimed safe up for auction in early September, according to KCRG. One of the most coveted sports cards ever sold just for $5,400.

The card was put up for auction at the Iowa Unclaimed Property Office and received 21 different bids from those looking to document a piece of sports history.

Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith told KCRG

Of course, it’s not every day that we come across an item we care about that gets us so excited. Once the card has been sold, proceeds from the sale will remain with the Iowa Treasure Hunt for claim by the rightful owner or heirs, as with any auction item.

According to KCRG, the treasurer’s office receives between two and three hundred abandoned safes each year. First, they try to contact the rightful owner. If they can’t find the rightful owner, they put the contents of the box up for auction when their storage room runs out.

Michael Jordan’s rookie season was in 1984. This card is 39 years old and you might think it’s worn or in pretty rough condition. Well…that’s not the case. This card has been evaluated by professional sports appraisers and has a PSA score of 7 out of 10. This means the card is in almost new condition.
