Brown is equally effusive about Pratt: “He’s such a great man, but he’s also a great actor and a great colleague. And that’s something you rarely get to do in this business—to work with men who really support you, understand you, and let you shine.”
Did her past male colleagues treat her with the same respect? Brown pauses for a heartbeat.
“Some There are definitely some of them, yes.”
At 19, Brown experienced hardships as a child actress. As she looks at the final months of her teenage years, she says, she thinks about the trajectory of her favorite actors: Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman and Jodie Foster – all child actors who went on to have careers that evolved and eclipsed their early successes.
She still struggles with self-doubt. It is useless to question all her preferences – her hairstyle, clothes, makeup, groom. When it comes to getting engaged at 19, she knows what people are thinking. But she also knows herself. She may have teenage insecurities, but she also has instincts that have helped her have a phenomenally successful career. She trusts herself.
If there’s one thing she believes in, it’s her own sense of time. “It’s like, I know I should make this movie now. I know I should write this book now. I know what I should do this now,” she says.
“It’s not because I Can not do it in 10 years; of course I can do it in 10 years,” she says. “But why when I know it will work now? Just like Florence will be there in 10 years. You will be able to see my film in 10 years on TV. And I know that me and Jake will be okay.”
She says she learned to seize the moment from her family, who moved across the country to allow her to pursue an acting career. “It’s like, why wait? Let’s do it.”
Both she and Bongiovi, Brown notes, have parents who married young and are still in love decades later. (Yes, his father is Jon Bon Jovi.) “We had a wonderful, loving relationship,” Brown says. “So it was something that we both had a common desire for.” They are close with both parents (they had lunch with her parents shortly before this interview). “His family has been so wonderful in accepting me and hugging me, and it’s so nice to find a second family in this,” Brown says.
During our interview, I repeatedly asked Brown to clarify: Where does she get her energy? 12-hour filming days, long production meetings, new film premieres in Florence, a book, UNICEF, the endless cycle of orphaned pets needing a home, global domination—doesn’t she get tired? She looks confused.
“Of course, anyone gets tired, but I doze!” she says. “And then I wake up and keep going.”
