The mother and daughter wardrobe is the secret of (sustainable) style to be copied to stars and royalty
Not only are the family jewels handed down from generation to generation: the shared wardrobe of mother and daughter has in fact become a well-known practice involving both royal looks – Letizia of Spain with her daughters Leonor and Sophie – and the garments of international divas – Heidi and Leni Klum -. A custom that strengthens the emotional bond with a sustainable implication, that is to extend as much as possible the life of a particular garment that has been kept for years (or decades) in the wardrobe. The dress already used by the mother and then worn by the daughter, represents the desire to be able to pass on to the new generations the value of savoir faire as well as a personal style, with a view to circularity (upcycling).

The dress worn on a particular occasion becomes the much loved object of memory which is then subsequently appreciated, interpreted by the latest generation through different, modern styling choices that are more suited to current trends. No copy-pasting, because the shared mother-daughter wardrobe represents the desire to pass on something that is particularly “expensive” (in the case of stars, a garment tailored for a red carpet) or “comfortable” (in the case of royal families) for be worn with a new esprit.
On the occasion of the Vogue Closet project, we retraced some outfits shared by famous mother and daughter couples, discover 10 looks compared below.
#1 Salma Hayek and Valentina Paloma Pinault
One of the hottest “mother and daughter” couples of the moment who saw her most glamorous moment on the red carpet of the 2023 Oscars: this was the occasion for Valentina Paloma Pinault to wear an Isaac Mizrahi dress taken from the Salma archive Hayek and worn in 1997 during the Fire Ice Ball. What catches the eye is the interpretation: in the vintage look a pouch bag covered in red crystals with a thick choker, while in 2023 the garment was combined with a silver-colored mini Jackie 1961 by Gucci and a diamond choker.

#4 Angelina Jolie and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt
Angelina Jolie is particularly appreciated for her elegant and minimal style off the set and particularly refined for the red carpet. She is also a mom who loves to share her wardrobe with daughters Shiloh and Zahara Jolie-Pitt, and she proved it during the promotion tour for the film Eternals in 2021. In the first case, Shiloh showed off a Valentino Haute Couture dress already worn by Angelina for the presentation of the film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. At a glance you notice the shortened hem.
