Mother of Parachino student killed by Hanta: “He must be the final martyr”

Ányela, the mother of Abraham Álvarez Ramírez, who died of a hantavirus infection in October, said: “At the moment we are not asking for compensation or any monetary benefit, no, we What is required is that the Payako Hospital can function normally.”

The 16-year-old young man was admitted to Paillaco Hospital on October 12 after suffering from stomach pain, fever and diarrhea. The diagnosis was gastroenteritis and he was sent home, but his condition worsened and he was sent to hospital the next day, now with respiratory symptoms.

Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to the Valdivia Base Hospital, and Abraham was taken directly to the intensive care unit. The first examination showed that he had fluid in his lungs due to a possible viral infection, and he died in the early morning. Saturday, October 14th.

“My son had all the symptoms of hantavirus, and since we are from a rural area, they asked nothing, no tests, nothing. The doctor said it was bacterial gastroenteritis, gave him Vidil, serum, and sent him He comes home,” lamented Anyera.

Additionally, she noted that urgent care data from Abraham’s referral to Valdivia from Paillaco showed they were consulted about possible rodent contact, but the mother ruled out that the question was ever asked.

On October 20, the Los Rios Health Service confirmed to Grupo DiarioSur that a clinical audit of the relevant care processes had been carried out at Paillaco Hospital, which is still ongoing.

“Making change in the hospital system”

For this reason, after nearly a month of mourning, Abraham’s family decided to take action and went to the Seremi de Salud de Los Ríos to learn the steps to prevent a similar situation from happening again.

“We filed a claim for this so that the hospital will no longer be negligent. If my son has to be the final martyr to prevent this from happening, so be it,” the mother said sadly.

She said this was not the first time her family had gone through a similar situation as they had to deal with the death of their mother almost eight years ago.

“This happened to my mother, they took her to Paillaco Hospital twice and they told her she had gastroenteritis. My mother had a high fever, she had diabetes, high blood pressure and they didn’t check her at home, ” Anyela recalled.

“Then they took her away again because she was very, very serious and they told her it was the same thing and it would go away and the third time they took her away again they couldn’t stabilize her and they sent her Valdivia My mother’s kidney and part of her other kidney were infected, so I got sepsis,” he said.

To that end, the family wants justice for Abraham and for authorities to address what they blame as problems at the care center. “Let the hospital system change,” Anyela said.

“They have a fourth shift where tests can be done, especially if there are more hantaviruses. If there is a laboratory in Paillaco, we don’t want to waste time going to Valdivia or going somewhere else to take the test,” he added.

“There should be an experienced doctor because only young doctors, an experienced doctor will evaluate their work. People are not against young doctors but they are inexperienced and they need someone there to evaluate their work,” the mother suggested.

Likewise, the family calls for participation in the peaceful march they will hold outside Paillaco Hospital on Saturday, November 18, to call attention and demand justice for Abraham Alvarez.
