Matthew Modine refused to appear in Stranger Things
There’s no denying that the Duffer Brothers had a stellar cast for the Netflix series. Stranger Things. But surprisingly, some of them initially refused to join the show. According to a 2022 interview with The keeperMatthew Modine, who plays sinister scientist Dr Martin Brenner, has revealed how he initially turned down the role.
“I didn’t want to do this. The Duffer Brothers kept saying, “Oh, he’s going to be very important.” I was never told that he abducts children.”

According to his interview with The keeperthe actor explained how he was attracted to the cast after meeting the young actors. But oddly enough, he was smitten by leading lady Millie Bobby Brown, who was just 11 years old when she first appeared. While discussing how he felt protective of her, Matthew Modine admitted that he committed himself to her.
“My desire was to protect her. When I was a young actor, if you had a show that was successful in 20 or 30 territories around the world, that would be incredible. Netflix is present in more than 190 territories. Thanks to streaming, Millie and her generation have gained a kind of fame, power and reach that is greater than anything before in the entertainment industry.”
After stating his reasons, the actor confessed to the atrocities he faced when he started out as a young actor in the entertainment industry. While discussing how often young stars fall prey to the glitz and glamor of Tinseltown, Matthew Modine mentioned exactly why he wanted to defend Millie Bobby Brown.
“Adoration and love are not real, they are tied to something you have created and that can be destructive.”
After all, although Matthew Modine initially avoided the Duffer brothers and their offer to star in Stranger Things, he ended up enjoying the experience. Additionally, he also felt the urge to protect Millie Bobby Brown from the ravages of fame, unlike his on-screen character who nurtured and used Eleven’s powers for his own benefit.
