Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that “any authority that wants to administer Gaza must fight terrorism and accept peace.”
In an interview given on Sunday to the American network NBC, Netanyahu indicated the possibility of reaching an agreement to free prisoners held by Hamas.
When asked about the possibility of reaching an agreement on women, children and elderly people detained by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu replied: “It is possible, but the less I say on this issue, the greater the chance that it will be reached.” .”
Netanyahu believes things are progressing thanks to Israeli military pressure, saying: “We were nowhere near (reaching an agreement) until we started the ground operations… The moment we started the ground operations, things changed. started to change.”
He added: “The pressure on Hamas leaders is what could lead to an agreement, and if an agreement is available, we will talk about it when it exists, and we will announce it if it is reached,” as quoted by Agence France-Presse.
The Israeli army estimates that around 240 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip during the first day of the Hamas attack. Among those detained are at least 30 minors, including children, according to Israeli media.
The Palestinian presidency said on Sunday that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian territories and that Israel’s attempts to separate it will fail, as the war between Israel and Palestinian armed factions in Gaza enters its 37th day amid a humanitarian crisis of vast reach in the strip.
Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said the Palestinian presidency called on Washington to take immediate action against Israel’s war of annihilation. He added: “Any international effort that does not end the occupation will be futile.”
In turn, the secretary of the Fatah movement declared in an intervention to Al Arabiya that Netanyahu is working to destroy the agreements signed with the Palestinian Authority and is working to prolong the war in the Gaza Strip. Hussein Al-Sheikh added: “Only a political solution will end the current war in Gaza. The international community is silent about what is happening to the Palestinians, and the military and security solutions to end the war in the Gaza Strip they won’t work.”
