It didn’t take long. Skydance Animation has found a new home, signing a multi-year deal with Netflix to develop and produce animated films that will be released directly to Netflix. The deal means Skydance’s entire existing slate of animated films will be released exclusively on Netflix.
The deal comes as a multi-year contract with Apple is coming to an end. Skydance Animation has already struck a deal with Netflix, and the deal covers a number of different projects. First new one – Enchanted a film that started its journey at Apple but will now debut on Netflix in 2024. It will be followed Pukuo in 2025.
The deal expands on the existing relationship between the two companies, which have already collaborated on a number of projects, including films. “Project Adam”, “Heart of Stone”, “The Old Guard”. And Spy Kids: Armageddon along with the series FUBAR, Altered carbon And Grace and Frankie.
John Lasseter continues to lead Skydance Animation alongside Prexie Holly Edwards. An offshoot of Skydance launched in 2017 and is based in Los Angeles and Madrid.
Netflix withdraws from Oscar for Best Animated Feature Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro, and the streamer is adding yet another vendor, and it won’t take long to make an impact. First this Enchanted follows the adventures of Elliane, a headstrong princess who must embark on a daring quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell turns her parents, the king and queen of Lambria, into monsters. Enchanted Directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek, Shark Tale) with an original score by composer Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater. Charmed does voiceover West Side StoryRachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, Jennifer Lewis, Nathan Lane and Tituss Burgess. The film was written by Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin and Linda Woolverton and produced by John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bruce Anderson for Skydance Animation.
Following this Puku, a buddy comedy about a small woodland creature and a majestic bird, two natural frenemies of the Valley who magically switch places and embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Pukuo Directed by Nathan Greno (Tangled story, tangled forever) with original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla. The film is produced by John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Mary Ellen Bauder Andrews for Skydance Animation.
Upcoming Skydance animated films for Netflix include: Ray Gunndirector Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant), as well as the untitled Jack and the Beanstalk project directed by Rich Moore (Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph).
