An attacker stabbed one person to death and injured another in Paris on Saturday evening before being arrested.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on the social media platform X that one person was killed and another was injured after a person attacked passers-by in central Paris.

The minister added: “The police have just bravely arrested an attacker who attacked passers-by in central Paris. One person was killed and another was injured. Please avoid the area.”

For its part, the Prosecutor’s Office of the French capital announced that the attacker, a French citizen born in 1997, was arrested and investigated in two cases of murder and attempted murder managed by the Paris criminal unit.

A French police source told Agence France-Presse that the attacker “was known for his extremism and suffered from psychological disorders.”

France’s interior minister said the attacker told police he was angry about the situation in Gaza.

Darmanin also said that the perpetrator of the knife attack was sentenced in 2016 to “four years” in prison for wanting to carry out another attack.

The minister added that the General Directorate of Internal Security had arrested him before he carried out that attack. He stressed that the attacker is on the watch list of the French security services and suffers from mental disorders.

He also said the victim was a German tourist. The minister added that two other people were injured in the attack after being attacked with a hammer.
