What aspect of this story touched you the most?
“I think history Oppenheimer is as dramatic as those I have talked about so far. for the big screen.
Naturally, the most interesting aspect for me was the attention to the group of scientists working on the Manhattan Project.
At the time when he and his colleagues were testing the atomic bomb, they could not with certainty eliminate the doubt that by pressing this button they could destroy the whole world.
They had no idea what kind of chain reaction they could start.
Even so, they had to make a decision and this thing “ringed in my head”, I thought about it for a long time.
So when I decided to make the film, I thought that I would like to try to get into the minds of the audience. I wanted the viewer to stay in the exact moment that the bomb was tested, and try to understand what the test was like, in which, in any case, there was a possibility of catastrophic consequences.
His film also reflects the emotional repercussions for the scientist, and it sometimes appears that he was crushed by the feelings of the blows.
“I think her story tells very well what it’s like to live with the consequences of your actions. After 1945 and after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer was always extremely careful about what he said and how he expressed himself. He never apologized, never spoke out, and never talked about his personal responsibility for the bomb tests.
All his actions, everything he did, how he tried to influence politics, as well as in his public statements, impressed me as a person who was well aware of the consequences of his actions and somehow felt guilty. It was all very convincing to me and I found it to be a great story for a film.”
As always in his films, and here the music plays a major role. However, in this particular film, silence also plays a central role. How did you “play” with these two opposing elements?
“Silence is very important to me, as well as the ability to “use” it and integrate it with special sound effects and music, which naturally evoke a lot of emotions and involve the audience in the film. We know there’s silence in space and I thought I wanted something use the silence effect, and that was one of my ambitions in the film, to create this sonic contrast and “fill” some shots with silence.”.
