Pirates of the Caribbean Producer ‘Wishes’ Johnny Depp Back in Franchise

Things have changed when it comes to Johnny Depp and his future in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Now producer Jerry Bruckheimer, on the occasion of the Oscars, has publicly made it clear that the doors are open for Depp’s return to the franchise. Bruckheimer went so far as to tell ET reporters that as far as Depp and the Pirates of the Caribbean are concerned, “We’ll see. I would love to. I wish it was in the movie. That’s all I can tell you.”

Anyone who follows the Pirates saga knows that Jerry Bruckheimer has never hesitated to support the idea that Depp continues to play Jack Sparrow, simply by changing the tempo and volume with which he says it, depending on the moment. However, as far as Hollywood is concerned, the 2023 Oscars red carpet is one of entertainment’s most public stages for selling new products, and as one of the industry’s biggest manufacturers, it’s hard to imagine Bruckheimer letting this statement slip without be fully aware and intent on its obvious implications…

For years, it seemed Disney was abandoning Depp’s role as Captain Jack Sparrow after the actor was embroiled in a controversial public divorce from ex-wife Amber Heard. However, after last year’s equally controversial public ruling in Depp’s favor — and subsequent final settlement with Heard — Depp appears to have cleared his way back to Hollywood.

Jerry Bruckheimer threw further smoke signals when he let it be known that things with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are indeed progressing: “We are all working on it. We’ll see how it turns out. But we are very excited. I think we will have a great script. And we’re getting close.”

It’s a big step forward from what Bruckheimer said late last year regarding the expansion of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – especially the run-up between Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and a spinoff/reboot starring Margot Robbie, the barbie stars:

“I think the script will be presented at some point. We’ve developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one is moving forward first, so that’s where we’re working on, to try and make that happen.”

So, once again: Was Jerry Bruckheimer making any wishes, or was he doing early promotion of Johnny Depp’s return in Pirates of the Caribbean 6? Time will tell soon…

Pirates of the Caribbean movies can be streamed on Disney+.
