Piura registers seventy deaths from pneumonia | Edition

Death toll from pneumonia in the region so far in 2023 has risen to 70 PiuraThis is reported by the National Center for Epidemic Prevention and Disease Control (Minsa) of the Ministry of Health.

According to statistics from the center, as of the 37th Epidemiological Week from September 10 to 16, 2023, there were 70 deaths in the Piura region of all ages. More deaths have been reported among adults over 60 years of age.

Therefore, 63 deaths correspond to those over 5 years of age and 7 deaths to children under 5 years of age. The final group of deaths has increased by one, as as of week 36, there have only been six deaths in the region.

Meanwhile, 5,886 pneumonia patients were reported in the region. 1,620 of them are under 5 years old. The number of cases this year has increased by 1,234 compared to 2022, with 4,652 cases recorded last year.

At the same time, the Medical School of Piura reported at the time that despite a slight drop in temperatures, cases would continue to increase, linked to influenza immunization and coverage with the bivalent COVID.19 vaccination.

“You must get the flu vaccine, the bivalent vaccine against COVID-19, and the bivalent booster vaccine for seniors. In addition to avoiding sudden changes in temperature, drinking very cold drinks, little shelter (depending on the climate) and eating foods containing vitamins A of foods that prevent respiratory diseases (orange and dark green diseases),” said Julio Barrena, secretary of the Medical School of Piura, a public health expert.

Likewise, he said, people should also get vaccinated against COVID-19 in light of the emergence of new variants, and although EG.5 has not yet been registered in Piura, it is likely that it is circulating and contagious.

“Vaccination with bivalent vaccines provides protection against the original variant and the omicron variant, and therefore also against EG.5. Currently, the demand for vaccination in our region has increased, but coverage remains low.” Barre Na said.
