Mazatlan. – When we don’t read or hear that plastics in the world have to be phased out, at least PET, we only use it once and that’s it, but when will we finally stop using them?
In Mexico, the NGO has several goals, one of which is for packaging and containers to be 100% recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030. Will the goal be achieved?
Single-use plastics may be synonymous with convenience, but the damage they cause, and the waste generated during their production and distribution, make them a huge threat to the environment and human health, the United Nations says.
Since 2019, Mexico has signed the National Agreement on the New Plastics Economy, which consists of authorities, companies, academia and civil society associations. Participating companies account for approximately 53% of the country’s market, or just over half.
“We are looking to 2030 to increase the recovery, recycling and use of plastics. To achieve a long-term positive impact, this agreement must be consolidated into a project that continues to promote the alliance.”

Raul Bolaños-Cacho Que, Chairman of the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee of the Senate of the Republic, noted that the country is on the right track to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
José Ramón Ardavín, Executive Director of the Private Sector Sustainable Development Research Council, pointed out that the business sector has realized cumulative investments of approximately 5.4 billion pesos in infrastructure.
Of this amount, P130 million was allocated to social responsibility projects and nearly P1.3 billion to impact education activities.
Goals of Mexico’s Plastics Use Agreement
- Recycle 70% of PET containers by 2025 and 80% by 2030.
- Recycle 30% of other plastics by 2025 and 45% by 2030.
- The content of recycled materials in containers and packaging should reach 20% by 2025 and 30% by 2030.
- By 2030, 100% of packaging and containers are recyclable, compostable or reusable.
What can I do at home?
- Choose reusable alternatives. Bags, glasses, tableware, there are dozens of options to achieve this.
- Move from “disposable” to “multi-use” utensils. Let’s forget about plastic cutlery at parties and look for the best ways to be sustainable.
- Recycle. There are modules that can carry your PET and they will take care of the rest.
- Reduce the amount of waste produced.
