Presentation of the book “Francis Drake. The Corsair Who Defied the Empire”

On Thursday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m., Archie Gagarin will host the presentation of a true best-selling book in history, recently recommended by Focus Storia magazine and already the subject of numerous rave reviews in the nation’s major newspapers: David Salomoni’s volume of the title “Francis Drake. The Corsair Who Defied the Empire”, published by Laterza in 2023.

The initiative, called “The World Beyond the World,” is promoted by the Fucina 900 association in collaboration with Archie Gagarin, the book presidium “Il Granaio” and the Dickens bookstore.

The volume tells about the events of the famous English corsair, who made a real trip around the world at the end of the sixteenth century; the story has become even more valuable and convincing thanks to the latest discoveries of the author, who has found some important documents that allow us to determine many of the details of the voyage and focus on the figures around Drake, such as the fundamental figure of Nuno da Silva.

David Salomoni is a researcher at the University of Foreigners of Siena.

He was a researcher at the University of Lisbon, as well as a Berenson Fellow at the Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Harvard University and a Mellon Fellow at the University of Oklahoma; author of numerous scientific essays and, in addition to “Francis Drake. The Corsair Who Challenged the Empire”, volumes “Magellan. The first trip around the world” (Laterza 2021), included in the list of “Fundamental Laterza”. 150 books to read the world.”

The presentation in Taranto is the first of a busy autumn tour that will take Salomoni and his Francis Drake to cities such as Bassano del Grappa and Trento before arriving at the Pisa Book Festival.
