Lionel Messi has unfollowed Alejandro Garnacho because the star prefers his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, says Rio Ferdinand.
The 19-year-old performed one of the Portuguese superstar’s trademark celebrations after scoring a stunning goal against Everton on Saturday.
Garnacho scored one of the best goals in Premier League history in the opening minutes at Goodison Park.
The Argentina international has long been an admirer of former Manchester United star Ronaldo.
Even the boots the youngster gifted fans on Monday were Nike’s Ronaldo-inspired Vapor 15 Mercurial Dream Speed boots.
Former Red Devils star Rio Ferdinand gave his opinion on Garnacho’s imitation of Ronaldo’s celebrations on the Five Vibes podcast.
He joked: “You know what I like about him? He’s not awesome.”
“Ganacho told me that Messi only unfollowed him because he made no secret of his preference for Ronaldo.
“He comes out and doesn’t care, ‘I’m Ronaldo’. Who’s the GOAT? Ronaldo. (Even) when he was in the Argentina team.”
Back in 2022, fans suspected Messi had unfollowed Garnacho after he shared a photo of Ronaldo calling the Al Nasr star the greatest of all time.

Just three weeks ago, the winger posed for a photo with the Argentina captain and described him as an “idol”.
Garnacho made his senior international debut this year for Albiceleste and has since played three games alongside the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
But Messi still doesn’t follow Garnacho on Instagram, despite the Manchester United starlet following him.
The feud between Ronaldo and Messi has lasted for most of their careers and they are both regarded as two of the best players in football history.
