Rio Ferdinand has once again expressed his sympathy for the service Rasmus Hoylund has received since joining Manchester United.

The 20-year-old Denmark international joined United for £72m during the summer transfer window but has scored just three goals in 13 games and is yet to break his own record in the Premier League.

Ferdinand, speaking out after a poor performance against Fulham on Saturday, said his struggles in front of goal were partly down to United not playing to the striker’s strengths; mainly providing him with quality into the penalty area Cross.

Ferdinand, who spent a pivotal 12-year career at Old Trafford, recalled that Ruud van Nistelrooy had a similar problem and he was forced to work with Cristiano Ronaldo to sort it out.

Ferdinand recalled in an interview with Five: “There was almost one day when Ruud van Nistelrooy more or less brought Cristiano Ronaldo to tears, saying, ‘How can I run when you don’t pass the ball?’ That’s how Hoylund feels with the wide players he now plays with.

“The difference is that Ruud is the main force of our team, the main goalscorer, he has experience, he has dignity and he can pull up the young guys and say, ‘Gee, put the ball in the box’ – he said There’s a lot more to it by the way. Hoylund is not that guy yet, he’s putting his feet under the table unless he’s the guy that’s going to be able to pull people up… because he needs to.”

Ferdinand also mentioned Ruud van Nistelrooy when analyzing Hoylund’s poor performance in front of goal at the weekend. He told TNT Sports: “His best qualities are not being seen because teams are not playing to his strengths.
