Rio Ferdinand urges Manchester United duo to follow Cristiano Ronaldo and Rasmus Hoylund’s orders

Rasmus Hoylund is yet to score his first Premier League goal for Manchester United, but Rio Ferdinand has a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired idea that could see him end his drought

Rio Ferdinand asked Manchester United to pass the ball more to allow Rasmus Hoylund to fire at Old Trafford.

The Danish striker has scored three goals in ten games for the Red Devils since joining from Atalanta for a huge fee, although none of those goals have come in the Premier League.

Ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby against local rivals Manchester City, Ferdinand gave advice on how his team-mates could end Hoylund’s drought – by passing the ball into the box. “I think we need to really play to the strengths of our players,” the former defender said on his Five-Man Vibes podcast.

“You look at Hoylund, he wants to pass the ball. You saw his header goals in the Champions League, you saw the way he attacks crosses.

“Get the ball out wide and cross! Anthony keeps cutting his left foot back, but he doesn’t go over it. Marcus doesn’t really go through that (left) side. Go past your full-back, or Get a yard and get the ball in the end zone! He’s going to attack it.”

Ferdinand’s instructions to his former club are very similar to those he gave the Red Devils a few years ago, when Cristiano Ronaldo was leading the charge. The Portuguese had just made a memorable second debut for the club, scoring twice against Newcastle.

However, Ferdinand is not entirely convinced that United are playing to Ronaldo’s strengths. “That’s one thing I would say, not a criticism, but one thing to watch and learn from the perspective of Manchester United’s first game at the weekend,” he said.
