Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are trading in their colorful Barbie suits for something sleeker as both will reportedly be sharing the big screen again in the prequel to the beloved heist film Ocean’s 11.
The film will be produced by Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment, according to GamesRadar+, which confirmed the casting. Representatives for Robbie did not immediately respond to the LA Times’ request for comment.
“They’re wonderful together—it would be great if we could do more projects even outside of this,” producer and LuckyChap co-founder Josie McNamara said of Robbie and Gosling while speaking with the video game publication last week at the launch. on the evening of the BFI London Film Festival before the screening of the thriller from the Saltburn production company.
According to GamesRadar+, the film will be directed by director Jay Roach, known for the films “Austin Powers” and “Bombshell.” Not much is known about the plot, but the film is expected to take place in 1960s Europe.
“I can’t say too much,” McNamara said of the Ocean’s film, “but I think we’re just trying to do the right thing by the franchise. I’m really excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.”
The Ocean’s prequel follows LuckyChap’s successful summer of record-breaking blockbuster Barbie. However, as the SAG-AFTRA cast strike continues, it is unclear when filming will begin. Following an agreement between the Writers Guild of America and the Motion Picture and Television Producers Alliance that ended a months-long strike, the Actors Guild is back at the negotiating table with the studios.
Robbie, her now-husband Tom Ackerley, Sophia Kerr and McNamara co-founded LuckyChap in 2014 with the goal of focusing on female characters and closing the gender pay gap for female actors. The production company also produced the films I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, Birds of Prey, and the miniseries The Handmaiden.
The latest release in the Ocean’s franchise came out in 2018 – Ocean’s 8, a spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy. Unlike the trilogy led by George Clooney and Brad Pitt, the 2018 film featured an all-female ensemble, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter and Awkwafina. Soderbergh’s 2001 film Ocean’s 11 was a remake of the 1960s film of the same name, The Rat Pack.
