Roy Keane brought up Celtic’s game against Rangers when debating whether Gary Neville had the flu during Arsenal’s north London derby goal celebration.
Sky pundit Neville made headlines at the weekend when he accused Gunners star Bukayo Saka of over-celebrating his penalty against Tottenham Hotspur after the winger jumped with cheering fans stand up. But Arsenal’s wild celebrations were short-lived as Anj Postkoglu’s Spurs struck back almost immediately, with Son Heung-min scoring a crucial equalizer in a 2-2 draw.
Neville pointed the finger at Mikel Arteta’s side and felt they made a mistake after Jorginho was denied possession by James Maddison in the build-up to Son Heung-min’s equalizer. While former basketball star Keane acknowledged Neville’s sentiments, the Manchester United icon recalled his own experience in the Glasgow derby.
During Keane’s six-month spell in Glasgow in 2006, he played in two Old Firm games, a 1-0 win at Ibrox and a goalless draw at Parkhead. The legendary midfielder believes there is nothing wrong with showing some passion during games. Fierce opponents – as long as you don’t lose focus.
He told Overlap: “I go the other way. I also criticize teams who don’t celebrate goals. You don’t want that.
“I know you’re being provocative but it’s a derby game. I don’t remember when we played Manchester City or when I was at Celtic and you scored against Rangers, it’s unbelievable .
“But the point is, you’re playing a top sport. You have to be able to say: ‘It’s done. We’re back on.”
