September 30, 2023, today’s almanac: birthdays, deaths and saints of the day.

This happened today

Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940, went down in history with his policy of “appeasement” towards the Nazis. He is especially remembered for the infamous Munich Agreement, signed on September 30, 1938, in which London and Paris gave in to Hitler’s demands, effectively giving him Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain declared that he guaranteed “peace to our age.” However, in the following months he ordered the rearmament of the United Kingdom, which may have meant that he didn’t believe it either. Churchill’s comment remains in the annals: “They could choose between dishonor and war. They have chosen dishonor and they will have war.” Eight years later, this terrible war is over. On September 30, 1946, in Nuremberg, judges began to announce (which lasted more than 24 hours) the verdict of the International Military Tribunal: 12 people were sentenced to death, including Goering, Ribbentrop, Keitel and Bormann.
