The list of suitors for a potential NBA expansion franchise in Las Vegas continues to grow.
NBA legend and TNT analyst tells The Courier-Journal that Shaquille O’Neal has expressed interest in becoming the owner of an NBA team in Las Vegas.
He said he wanted to have his “own team” and didn’t see himself working with anyone else.
“I wanted to take it all for myself,” O’Neill told The Courier-Journal.
O’Neal has already ventured into owning an NBA team, taking a minority stake in the Sacramento Kings in 2013 and selling it in 2022.
LeBron James, O’Neal’s teammate with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2009-10 NBA season, has also expressed interest in owning a team in Las Vegas if the league decides to expand. James, who turns 39 in December and is the NBA’s oldest active player, is only allowed to receive an ownership stake if he is no longer on the roster.
Silver confirmed in July that the league would consider expanding the roster from 30 teams after negotiating its next media rights deal. Current contracts with ABC/ESPN and TNT expire after the 2024-25 NBA season.
The NBA has not expanded its roster since the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats (now known as the Charlotte Hornets) in 2004.
