In 2018, Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment acquired the copyright to the book by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. She said, published the following year. In June 2021, Universal Pictures announced that the project, starring Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan as the two main characters, would be directed by Maria Schrader and produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
