Simon and Marco Monroe on TV’s ‘House of Avalon’: ‘We’re Just Getting Started’

If you are fans RuPaul’s Drag Raceespecially Season 13 winner Simon and Season 12 runner-up Gigi Goode, then you’re familiar with the House of Avalon.

The Los Angeles-based creative team is the subject of a new, genre-bending series on World of Wonder’s WOW Presents Plus, which is described as “part talk show, part comedy, and part Follow-style documentary.” It includes documenting Symone’s first Met Gala, Goode’s transition, celebrity interviews on a talk show hosted by Symone, and more. As the logline says, “Whether it’s fashion, nightlife, drag, art, comedy or media, this chosen family is creating one iconic pop culture event moment after another and rocketing toward success on their own terms.”

The series, along with Goode and Simon, features fellow Avalon members Marco Monroe, Hunter Crenshaw, Grant Vanderbilt, Caleb and Riley.

In an interview with Shadow and Act with Simone and Monroe, the former said she was excited for the world to learn more about the group, their relationship and how they work.

“It’s very special to me (for people to meet the other members) because I see it every day,” she said. “But I’m really glad that everyone will be able to experience it and see how we interact with each other and see how we break up, Chili (laughs). This is something special for me and I’m really excited for everyone to see it. I think now is the right time for this to happen. I think the world needs this, Chile.”

Monroe, who is known not only for his work during Goode and Simone’s appearance on the show, but also for his work as a designer and stylist for Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion and others, said he is ready for this moment to let people know him. saw. him in front of the camera.

“For me, I’ve never been shy about sharing these things, but I had my doubts,” he said. “But at the end of the day, that’s how people get to know you. I’m ready to come out from behind the scenes. We really have a lot of fun and I think that’s what’s fun about this show and what we’ve created is an opportunity to take everything we love about television into one capsule and also get to know us better. .

The House of Avalon’s popularity has grown incredibly over the last few years since Goode and Simon have been there. Drag Race. And even in the last year or so, they’ve gone from being an influence on the Los Angeles scene to having national and global reach. They influence fashion and nightlife in Los Angeles, currently hosting a bi-weekly show at WeHo’s Gloss and another at DTLA’s Precinct.

“Sometimes we get the message that we’re above it all, and I think this show in particular will show that we don’t take ourselves so seriously,” Simon shared. “And I think when people meet us and get to know us, they like that about us. And that’s why we can keep coming back to these things and continue to have the success and careers that we have because we’re amazing, amazing divas, but we also like to have a good time and we’re good people. and we don’t take it too seriously. I think it has a lot to do with why we’re having this moment in the first place.”

Monroe added: “We like to have fun. So while maybe sometimes the fun thing about the show (is that) you get to see behind the scenes, like, yeah, we might think that just moving the jacket (and) where it lands is a big deal at this point. moment, but this is our way of playing, because it’s all a game. Life is fun. So we’re just having fun. The main way is always to just make sure we make each other laugh or have fun. And if it can resonate with someone outside of our chosen family, then great, let’s get them on board.”

Avalon TV bears the same name as the Twitch stream that the group launched during quarantine. It was a kind of TV channel that had several shows and skits. In some ways, it’s a natural next step on the path to television. And although this is happening now, the sky is still the limit for the group.

“I think we are all such creative people and we have so many ideas that are not limited to one area,” Monroe said. “Often creative people think that they need to force themselves into one lane, but this is not true, we like to write short stories. We do skits, we do Christmas shows, we love all those things. We create things, we create things. And the point of it all is that we love to tell stories. And I think if we can continue to tell stories in different aspects, whatever they may be, I think after this season is over, it will be fun for me. Now we have more ideas. This is ongoing and we want to do more. And I think we’re just getting started.”
