Cozy, creative and colorful films for autumn
09.29.2023
Autumn is here. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling, and we’re ready to pull out the blankets and curl up to watch our favorite fall movies.
It’s up to you to decide which movie would be perfect for fall. For some, it’s a color palette of browns, golds and reds; some want films that reflect the reflective nature of the season; while others are content with comfort.
No matter where you are, here are four movies that capture the fall spirit.
IN Far from paradiseTodd Haynes uses the vibrant fall colors of 1950s Connecticut to set the tone for his contemporary melodrama. Stuck in a loveless marriage to a closeted husband (Dennis Quaid), Katie Whitaker (Julianne Moore) is secretly attracted to Raymond (Dennis Haysbert), the local gardener. Illuminating themes of racism, homophobia and class struggle that were often coded within the invisible context of classic Hollywood.Far from paradise is a sumptuous re-imagining of classic ’50s dramas such as Douglas Sirk. All that heaven allows. New York Times writes, “He rediscovers a wrenching, desiring humanity in a genre (and period) too often subject to easy parody or ironic appropriation.”

IN Moonrise KingdomWes Anderson creates a magical story about two children, Susie (Kara Hayward) and Sam (Jared Gilman), who escape to a secret cove on the island of New Penzance in 1965. Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton, among others, bring back the young couple, their summer love lasting well into the fall. Indeed, the film’s color palette echoes, as analyst Patrick Ford writes, “…the vibrancy of early autumn, creating a nurturing environment supported by earthy tones and textures,” an image that suggests nostalgia. “Bright, rich colors and idealized storytelling. Moonrise Kingdom It’s like a childhood memory.” Screenrant writes.

IN Time for ArmageddonWriter and director James Gray uses his personal memories of growing up in Queens, New York in the 1980s to explore a complex story of friendship and family. Supported by a remarkable cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins, two young actors – Banks Repeta and Jaylin Webb – play friends forced to make very adult decisions. For York Dispatcher“The look and feel of autumn on Flushing’s treeless streets and wallpapered interiors hangs in the air in every scene.” Having so accurately recreated the world of his past, Gray, according to AV club“offers a coming-of-age story that is both timeless and timely.”

Joe Wright Pride and Prejudice is a cozy period piece that is literate, witty and completely charming. Rating by Collider In this acclaimed novel, the best adaptation of Jane Austen, Keira Knightley plays love interest Elizabeth Bennett and Matthew Macfadyen plays her unlikely love, Mr. Darcy. Bringing new energy to the story, Wright, Entertainment Weekly notes, “makes the past feel as turbulent and alive as the present.” And yet, as fast-paced and action-packed as Wright’s adaptation is, with its stunning cinematography, dance numbers and remarkable supporting cast (including Judi Dench, Carey Mulligan and Donald Sutherland), it retains what we love about the novel. How Chronicle of San Francisco writes: “Sit in your seat and take in the richness that lies before you, just as if you were reading a good book.”
